MISSION 66 was a movement by the National Park Service to modernize park facilities and accommodate the surge in postwar American tourism.
Midcentury modern architect Richard Neutra imagined a new complex for the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park in partnership with Robert Alexander.
The efficient and strikingly modern village plan included visitor services, office, maintenance, community services, and employee housing all in one location inside the park.
Located just off Route 66 in Northeastern Arizona, the Painted Desert complex is a must-see for lovers of midcentury modern style in the desert.
