Artist-in-Resident: Joyce Heuman

Joyce HeumanDates: September 2016

Biography

Early on, I knew that painting is about relating my inner world to reflect the art of living in the outer world and I have followed that belief throughout my life.

After training at the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO and graduated with a BFA in Fine Arts, I moved to Cortez in 2001.

The landscape of my home in McElmo Canyon, near Cortez, is where my work begins. Living near the Canyon of the Ancients and exploring Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, I bring my life to my paintings. As an artist, I am tuned into the earth elements providing a show of infinite inspirations.

Joyce Heuman | Rock Waves

I enjoy exploring the history and wild animals, insects, water, rocks, and trees of each area I visit. I’ve been fortunate to travel to many places that bring me awe. Experience brings technique, yet the medium of watercolor has a life of its own.

I am drawn to watercolor’s liquid nature and delight in what happens when applied to paper. My paintings reflect the joy of watercolors!

Over several years, my work has won honorable mentions in national and online competitions and many remain in private and public collections throughout the U.S.
